Celtx Alternatives for Screenwriters (2026)
Celtx began as a free screenwriting program and grew into a production platform with breakdowns, scheduling and team tools. That's great if you're planning a shoot, and more than you need if you just want to write. This guide covers why writers look elsewhere and which alternatives fit which kind of writer.

1. Why writers look beyond Celtx
- The free plan is small. As of October 2026 it covers one project, so a second script means a paid plan.
- It's built for production. Scheduling, breakdowns and team seats are useful on set, but they add weight when all you want is to write pages.
- Team pricing. Team plans are sold to groups, which doesn't suit a writer working alone.
2. The alternatives at a glance
Checked in October 2026; confirm current prices on each company's site.
| Program | How you pay | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| WriterDuet | Free plan (up to 3 projects), then subscription | Co-writing in real time, any device |
| Final Draft 13 | One-time license ($249.99 list, often ~$199.99) | The industry-standard desktop program |
| Fade In | One-time license (about $79.95) | Low one-time price, Windows, Mac and Linux |
| Kashna Script | Monthly or yearly, 14-day free trial (opening soon) | Reflex formatting as you type, no menus, any device |
3. Which one for which writer
- You write with a partner: WriterDuet's live co-writing is the strongest of the group.
- You want to pay once and own it: Fade In costs least up front; Final Draft is the standard many productions use.
- You want to write fast and never think about formatting: Kashna Script, our program, is built so you never think about the software: Reflex formats each line as you type, so there is no Tab-pressing or stopping to fix elements; there are no menus, and every tool is one key away. It runs in the browser on any device with nothing to install, makes finished title pages from your details, keeps earlier drafts in Kashna Vault, and opens and exports .fdx. It opens soon; join the early access list.
- You're running pre-production with a team: stay with Celtx. That's exactly what it's for.
4. Moving your scripts out of Celtx
Before switching, export each script from Celtx. A PDF keeps a readable copy of every draft; for continued editing, export to a format your new program can import, such as Final Draft (.fdx) or Fountain where available. Open the longest script in the new program and check a few pages against our format guide: scene headings, dialogue width and page breaks should all look right.
To check an exported file, open it in our free screenplay reader: it shows .fdx and Fountain files as script pages in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
5. Frequently asked questions
Is Celtx still free?

For co-writing, WriterDuet; for a one-time purchase, Fade In or Final Draft; for fast solo writing on any device, Kashna Script.
Can I move my scripts from Celtx to another program?
Yes. Export each script from Celtx, keep a PDF of every draft, and import an editable export such as .fdx or Fountain into your new program.
