How the estimate works

The film industry estimates screen time with a simple rule: one page of a properly formatted screenplay is about one minute on screen. The calculator applies that rule. For multi-camera sitcoms, whose dialogue is double-spaced, it counts about half a minute per page.

When you paste a script, the calculator lays it out the way a screenplay page would: action lines about 60 characters wide, dialogue about 35, and roughly 54 lines to a page. That gives an estimated page count, and from it an estimated runtime.

It's an estimate, not a stopwatch. Action-heavy scenes run longer than their pages, and fast dialogue runs shorter. Over a whole script the differences usually even out.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes is one page of a screenplay?

About one minute of screen time, when the script is written in standard screenplay format. Multi-camera sitcom pages run about half a minute because their dialogue is double-spaced.

How long is a 90-page screenplay?

About 90 minutes, or an hour and a half, following the one-page-per-minute rule.

Is my screenplay uploaded anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The text you paste stays on your device.

Why is my runtime different from the finished film?

Directors add or cut moments, action plays longer than it reads, and dialogue can be faster. The estimate tells you what your pages suggest, which is what readers and producers look at.
