WriterDuet vs Final Draft: Which Should You Use? (2026)

WriterDuet and Final Draft are two of the most popular screenwriting programs, and they're built on different ideas. Final Draft is a desktop program you buy once. WriterDuet lives in the cloud and was designed for writing together. This guide compares them on what actually matters day to day.

1. The short answer

Choose Final Draft if you work mostly alone on a computer, want to pay once, and need the program most studios already use. Choose WriterDuet if you co-write, switch between devices, or want to start for free.

2. Side by side

3. Price

Final Draft is a large payment once, then occasional paid upgrades when a major version comes out. WriterDuet is a smaller recurring payment, with a free plan to start. Over two or three years the totals can end up close; what differs is whether you prefer to pay up front or spread it out, and whether the free plan's three-project limit is enough for you.

4. Writing together

This is WriterDuet's home ground. Several writers can type in the same script at once and see each other's cursors and changes live, which is why writing partners and writers' rooms like it. Final Draft also offers collaboration, but it was born as a single-writer desktop program and it shows.

5. Devices and offline work

Final Draft runs on Windows and Mac; the retail license lets two of your computers run it at the same time. WriterDuet runs in the browser and on phones and tablets, works offline and syncs later. If you write on a train, at a café on your phone and at home on a laptop, WriterDuet fits that life better.

6. Files and industry use

Final Draft's .fdx is the format most productions exchange, and many studios run Final Draft. WriterDuet opens and exports .fdx, so in practice you can deliver what a production asks for from either program. For contests and agents, what matters is a correctly formatted PDF, which both produce.

7. A third option

If neither fits, there are other good programs; our Final Draft alternatives guide compares them. One of them is ours. Kashna Script, our program, is built so you never think about the software: Reflex formats each line as you type, so there is no Tab-pressing or stopping to fix elements; there are no menus, and every tool is one key away. It runs in the browser on any device with nothing to install, makes finished title pages from your details, keeps earlier drafts in Kashna Vault, and opens and exports .fdx. It's opening soon with a 14-day free trial; you can join the early access list.

8. Frequently asked questions

Is WriterDuet better than Final Draft?

For real-time co-writing and working across devices, WriterDuet is usually the better fit. For solo desktop writing with a one-time purchase and the format most studios use, Final Draft is the safer choice.

Can WriterDuet open Final Draft files?

Yes. WriterDuet imports and exports .fdx files, so you can exchange scripts with Final Draft users.

Is WriterDuet free?

WriterDuet has a free plan that allows up to three projects at a time without watermarks or page limits. Paid monthly and yearly plans remove the limit and add features.

Do studios require Final Draft?

Many productions exchange .fdx files, but they rarely care which program created them. Any program that exports a correct .fdx and PDF will usually do.

Fade out.

Kashna Script formats your screenplay while you write: scene headings, characters, dialogue, transitions, all in industry format. No menus. Every tool one key away.
