Free Screenplay Reader
Open a Final Draft (.fdx) or Fountain file and read it as a proper screenplay, with a scene list, a character list, and print or save as PDF. No account, no upload: the file never leaves your device.
Free tool · Works in your browser
Your file is opened right here in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Final Draft (.fdx) · Fountain (.fountain, .txt)
Conversion keeps text, bold/italic/underline, scene numbers, dual dialogue and the title page. Notes, revisions and section headings are not carried over.
What it opens
The reader opens Final Draft files (.fdx) and Fountain files (.fountain, .spmd, or a .txt written in Fountain). It shows scene headings, action, dialogue, parentheticals, transitions, bold, italic and underline, scene numbers, the title page and dual dialogue. Comments and revision marks are not shown.
What you get
- The script as pages. Courier 12, standard margins and line widths, page numbers, and (MORE) and (CONT'D) where a speech runs over a page.
- A scene list. Every scene with its number, INT/EXT, day or night, the page it starts on and how long it runs. Click a scene to jump to it.
- A character list. Speeches and words for each speaking character, and the scenes they appear in.
- Print or save as PDF in standard screenplay layout.
Your script stays yours
Everything happens in your browser. Your file is not uploaded, not stored and not sent anywhere, and there is no account. When you close the tab, it is gone. This matters for unproduced scripts, so we built the reader to never need a server.
Tips for a clean read
- Export from your writing program as .fdx (Final Draft, WriterDuet, Fade In, Highland and others all can) or as Fountain.
- In Fountain, scene headings start with INT. or EXT., and character names are in capitals on their own line. For languages without capital letters, start the name with @.
- Pages are laid out with standard industry settings. Your own program may break pages a little differently, so the page count of a long script can differ by a few pages.
- The reader only shows a script. To edit it, open the same file in your writing program. For a format check, use the free format checker; to estimate the film's length, use the runtime calculator.
Kashna Script writes the page you see here while you type. Reflex formats every line as you go, there are no menus, and it opens and exports .fdx. If you'd like to write this way, Join the early access list.
Frequently asked questions
Is the screenplay reader really free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account, and has no limit on how many scripts you open.
Is my script uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and laid out entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else.
Which files can I open?
Final Draft (.fdx) files and Fountain files (.fountain, .spmd, or .txt written in Fountain). PDF and Word files can't be read back into a script, so export .fdx or Fountain from your writing program.
Why is the page count different from my program?
The reader lays pages out with standard industry settings. Programs break pages slightly differently, so a long script can differ by a few pages.
Can I edit the script here?
No, this is a reader. To edit, open the same file in your writing program.
Kashna Script formats your screenplay while you write: scene headings, characters, dialogue, transitions, all in industry format. No menus. Every tool one key away.
